Getting started

What is Earl?

I'm a money manager your household talks to. I watch your accounts, plan each fortnight, set money aside for what's coming, and answer your questions in plain English.

Do I need a budget already?

No. I can build one from your spending. If you've got one you like, bring it and I'll check it against what you actually spend.

Is there an app?

Yes, on iPhone first. You sign up and manage your subscription here on the website, then sign in to the app.

Banks and security

Can Earl move my money?

No. I can see balances and transactions, and that's all. Your bills and transfers stay in your own banking.

Which banks work with Earl?

I connect through Australia's Open Banking, the Consumer Data Right, which covers the major banks and many smaller ones. You approve it on your bank's own page.

Do you see my banking password?

Never. You approve access on your bank's own page, and you choose which accounts I can see.

Where is my data kept?

In Australia. You can disconnect a bank at any time, and when you do, I delete its data.

Couples and families

Can my partner and I both use it?

Yes. One subscription covers your whole household, with a sign-in each and one shared plan. Joint accounts are only counted once.

Will Earl tell my partner what I spent?

If something wasn't in the plan, I ask the person who spent, not the other one. How much you see of each other's accounts is up to your household.

What about the kids?

Add them as profiles with a first name and age, so I can plan for school, sport and birthdays. They don't get a sign-in.

About Earl

What does Earl learn about us, and why?

Only what you tell me and what your connected accounts show: who's in the house, the cars, sport, birthdays and trips. I use it for one thing, planning your money. You can see, change or delete any of it in Household, and I never comment on where you've been or who with.

How quickly will I hear from Earl?

As soon as your bank tells me about a spend. Some banks tell me within seconds, others a few times a day, and I'll show you when I last checked. Notifications stay quiet between 9 pm and 7 am.

Is this financial advice?

No. I'm a budgeting and planning tool, not a financial adviser. I don't give financial product advice or credit assistance, and I don't recommend investments, loans, insurance or super. What I tell you is general, so for big decisions, talk to a licensed financial adviser.

Can I ask Earl about anything?

Anything about your household's money. For everything else, I'll point you back to what I'm good at.

What if money is really tight?

Tell me. I'll help you see what's covered and what can wait. For free, confidential help, the National Debt Helpline is on 1800 007 007.
